Canucks Fall to the Bandits
Tuesday night the Brooks Bandits were in town to face off against your Calgary Canucks. The Bandits have come away with the win in both games we have played against them this season, so the Canucks were looking to shake things up in the series.
The Bandits opened the scoring in the first with a goal by #6 Kord Pankewicz at 8:53. While the Canucks battled back they were unable to get anything in the net. After 20 minutes the Brooks Bandits were leading across the board holding onto a 1-0 lead and leading in shots 13-7.
In the second the Bandits extended their lead as #12 Connor Jean put one in the net. #37 Tyrell Mappin made it 3-0 Brooks scoring on the power play. Shots after the second period were 19-10.
To open the third #22 Parker Foo added to the Bandits lead scoring at 1:06. Mid-way through the period #20 Oliver Chau made it 5-0. With the Canucks unable to get back in the game the Bandits one 5-0.
The star of the game for the Canucks was #9 Ben Assad.
Canucks Slay the Dragons in Drumheller
Friday the Canucks made a trip to Drumheller for a showdown in the Dragons Den. With success against the Dragons last weekend and over the course of the season the Canucks were looking to repeat again this weekend.
With both teams putting pressure on net in the first both teams were eager to be the first on the board. Things worked in the Canucks favour as #8 Dylan Williamson put one in the net, with help from #11 Dalton Ossman. 2 minutes and 37 seconds later #19 Parker Ward shot one past the Dragons goaltender on the penalty kill after a set up from #21 Kyler Magus. At the end of the period the Canucks were up 2-0 and leading in shots 7-6.
In the second the Canucks battled hard putting up 12 shots on net while holding off the Dragons to only 6 shots. With just 35 second left in second period #27 Brayden Nicholetts scored to bring the Dragons within 1. After 40 minutes shots on net were 19-12 in favour of the Canucks.
Mid-way through the third the Canucks solidified their lead as #10 Sage Englund extended the Canucks lead to 3-1. #11 Dalton Ossman and #8 Dylan Williamson assisted on the goal. The Canucks were able to fend of the Dragons and take the win. Shots at the end of the game were 24-19 for the Canucks.
With a goal and assist #8 Dylan Williamson was selected as the game star.
Eagles Take a Win on Home Ice
To finish out the weekend the Canucks travelled to Canmore for a matchup against the Eagles.
Mid-way through the first the Eagles capitalized on the power play as #9 Dondre Watson put one in the net to take a 1-0 lead. At the end of the period shots were 14-9 in favour of the Canucks.
In the second things opened up for the Eagles. At 3:30 #25 Travis Verveda scored on the power play to make it 2-0. With another power play #17 Braden Saretsky extended the lead to 3-0. Just a minute later #28 Brett Stewart put one in the net to make it 4-0 Eagles. The Canucks pushed back finally getting on the board as #11 Dalton Ossman put one in the net with help from #5 Coby Mack. The Eagles responded quickly as #9 Dondre Watson regained their 4 goal lead, it was 5-1 Eagles. With just under 4 minutes remaining #2 Braxton Kane scored an unassisted goal on the power play to make it 5-2. With time expiring shots on net were 29-19.
To open the third #29 Bryce Platt scored on the power play once again to make it 6-2 Eagles. Midway through the period #9 Ben Assad shot one past the Eagles goaltender to make it 6-3 after a set up from #18 Matt Painchaud and #28 Brett Van Os. With another power play #25 Travis Verveda scored for the Eagles to make it 7-3. With the Canucks unable to make the comeback the Eagles won 7-3. Shots at the end of the game were 39-36 for the Canucks.
The star of the game for the Canucks was #4 Allan MacPherson.
Up next, the Canucks face off against the Brooks Bandits on Wednesday, February 1 at Max Bell Centre, Puck drops at 7:00 pm. Then the Canucks head out to Okotoks on Saturday, February 4 for a second place showdown against the Oilers.
