Canucks Have a Solid Performance at the AJHL Showcase

Canucks Take Game 2 Against the Wolverines

For the first matchup at the AJHL Showcase the Canucks took on the Whitecourt Wolverines for the second time this season. The Canucks were first on the board as #18 Matt Painchaud put one past Pierce Diamond with help from #6 Scott Nicholson at 17:16 of the first period.

With the lead after 20 minutes of play the Canucks were looking to make more impact in the second period. About 2 minutes into the period #12 Andrew Marshall extended the Canucks lead to 2-0, assists going to #17 Cale Chalifoux and #6 Scott Nicholson. A short time later #22 Josh Giacomin got his first goal of the season from #24 Nic Herringer to put the Canucks up 3-0. At 9:50 of the second period newly named Captain #9 Ben Assad added another for the Canucks after being set up by #8 Ryan McKinnon and #18 Matt Painchaud. At the end of the period the Canucks lead the Wolverines 4-0.

The Canucks scoring didn’t end there as #9 Ben Assad got his second of the game on the power play from #4 Allan MacPherson and #18 Matt Painchaud at 3:38 of the third. The Whitecourt Wolverines responded getting their first of the game with a goal by #16 Eric Krienke. The Canucks didn’t let up as defenceman #5 Coby Mack made it 6-1 with a power-play goal assisted by #9 Ben Assad. With just 3 minutes remaining the Wolverines added another to the board with a goal by #15 Morgan Messenger.

The Canucks won the game 6-2! Shots at the end of the game were 35-26 in favour of the Canucks.

Canucks Showcase Talent Over the Pontiacs

Next up for the Canucks at the AJHL Showcase was the Bonnyville Pontiacs. #12 Andrew Marshall got the Canucks first goal of the game with help from #8 Ryan McKinnon and #23 Mark Drohan at 3:03 of the first period. The Bonnyville Pontiacs responded a short time later with 2 power play goals coming from #29 Brendan Holterhus and #27 Ryan Symington. At the end of the period the Pontiacs were leading 2-1 and shots were 13-8 for the Canucks.

To start the second period the Canucks got a quick goal 44 seconds in to tie the game at 2. The goal was scored by #19 Parker Ward who was assisted on the play by #21 Kyler Magus and #27 Jordan McConnell. With his second goal of the game #12 Andrew Marshall gave the Canucks the lead with help from #10 Michael Spenrath and #13 Connor Blake. After 40 minutes of play the Canucks were winning 3-2.

At 3:02 of the third #9 Ben Assad extended the Canucks lead as he put one past Pontiacs’ goaltender Matteo Esposito on the power play. #23 Mark Drohan and #4 Allan MacPherson were given the assists on the goal.  #18 Matt Painchaud added to the Canucks lead with another power play goal from #8 Ryan McKinnon.  Bonnyville worked to get back in the game as #27 Ryan Symington got an unassisted goal on the penalty kill.  It was short lived as #12 Andrew Marshall scored his third of the game to complete the hat trick assisted by #13 Connor Blake and #4 Allan MacPherson.

After 60 minutes the Canucks won the game 6-3!  Shots were 37-21 for the Canucks. 

Up next the Canucks head out of town to take on the Drumheller Dragons on Friday October 7th. Then the Canucks return home to Max Bell Centre to play against the Sherwood Park Crusaders Saturday October 8th at 4:45pm.  See you there!
