Canucks In Second Place After Going 4-1

Canucks Defeat the Mustangs

Last Friday the Canucks were set to face off against our cross town rivals the Calgary Mustangs for the final time this season.  With 5 wins under their belts the Canucks were looking for the last win to sweep the series.

The Canucks kicked things off in the first as #22 Josh Giacomin put one in the net with help from #18 Matt Painchaud and #28 Brett Van Os.  With action on both ends of the ice the Canucks maintained their 1-0 lead as time expired. Shots on net were 13-5 in favour of the Canucks.

In the second period things took a turn on the ice.  Midway through the period the Mustangs tied the game with a goal from #17 Tayden Woods.  With 1:32 remaining in the period the Mustangs took the lead as #20 Matthew Rokosh put one in the back of the net.  With the Canucks unable to put one in the Mustangs led by a score of 2-1 after 40 minutes of play.  Shots on net at the end of the period were 26-15 in favour of the Canucks. 

The Canucks started the third with a bang as #18 Matt Painchaud tied up the game just 14 seconds into the period.   Assists on the goal went to #6 Scott Nicholson and #28 Brett Van Os.  Just a few minutes later #5 Coby Mack made it 3-2 for the Canucks after a set up from #25 Braydon Jenkins and #7 Josh Gagne.  With 4:45 remaining #22 Josh Giacomin got his second goal of the night from #28 Brett Van Os and #18 Matt Painchaud.  With time running out the Canucks took the win 4-2.  Final shots on net were 48-18 for the Canucks.

With a 3 point night #18 Matt Painchaud was selected as the star of the game for the Canucks.

Canucks Have Success Against the Bobcats

Sunday afternoon the Canucks hosted the Lloydminster Bobcats during our Hockey Day in Calgary event. 

The Canucks jumped into action in the first period as #5 Coby Mack put one on the board at 4:19. Assists on the goal went to #23 Mark Drohan and #22 Josh Giacomin. #23 Mark Drohan added to the Canucks lead with help from #21 Kyler Magus and #19 Parker Ward.   With the period coming to a close the Canucks held on to their 2 goal lead. Shots after the first were 14 for the Canucks and 6 for the Bobcats.

The Canucks kept things coming in the third as #22 Josh Giacomin put one in the net at 10:18 after a set up from #18 Matt Painchaud and #28 Brett Van Os.  At 10:34 #25 Braydon Jenkins added another for the Canucks to make it 4-0.  Assist on the goal went to #10 Sage Englund and #5 Coby Mack. 20 seconds later #11 Dalton Ossman scored to extend the Canucks lead to 5-0 with help from #10 Sage Englund and #25 Braydon Jenkins.   Before the period was over the #18 Matt Painchaud added another to the board, from #22 Josh Giacomin and #28 Brett Van Os.   With a very busy second period the Canucks would head into the third with a 6-0 lead. Shots on net were 28-17 for the Canucks.

The third saw action on both ends of the ice as the Bobcats were looking to make a dent in the Canucks lead.  Things didn’t go their way as the Canucks scored once again at 15:59 with a goal from #21 Kyler Magus.  Assists went to #27 Jordan McConnell and #4 Allan MacPherson.   With the third coming to a close the Canucks took the game 7-0!  Shots on net at the end of the game were 36-29 for the Canucks.

With a goal and an assist in the game #5 Coby Mack was the Canucks game star.

Canucks Take the Game in OT

Tuesday night the Canucks were set for a battle against the Drumheller Dragons. With another opportunity to sweep the series the Canucks were looking for a win against the Dragons.  

Things started off in the Dragons favour as they scored their first of the night at 9:06 of the first period with a goal from #39 Chad Hurtubise.  Take advantage of a power play #24 Cody Young extended the Dragons lead to 2-0.  2 minutes later #14 Jordan Taupert made it 3-0 Dragons scoring on the power play.  Even though the Canucks outshot the Dragons 16-10 they were unable to get one in the net.  After 20 minutes the Dragons had a 3-0 lead. 

Looking to switch things up in the second the Canucks hit the ice with force.  At 4:11 #9 Ben Assad scored on the  power play with help from #28 Brett Van Os and #22 Josh Giacomin to make it 3-1.  Continuing to push for the comeback #11 Dalton Ossman put one in the net to bring the Canucks within 1. Assists on the goal went to #25 Braydon Jenkins and #8 Dylan Williamson.  19 second later the Canucks tied up the game with a goal by #19 Parker Ward, who was assisted by #3 Eric Gilholme and #21 Kyler Magus. With time expiring in the period the game was tied 3-3. The Canucks put up 19 shots in the second to have a 35-21 shot lead over the Dragons.

With thing even up after 2 period of play the Canucks were looking to make their move in the third. #22 Josh Giacomin gave the Canucks their first lead of the night with an unassisted goal just 1:32 into the period.  Battling hard the Canucks were trying to hold off the Dragons, however #6 Blake Kleiner tied up the game for the Dragons after scoring on the power play.  With time running out the game was heading into overtime.  Shots at the end of the period were 45-33 in favour of the Canucks.

With overtime under way the Canucks were hungry for the win.  #23 Mark Drohan settled things by putting one in the back of the net with help from #9 Ben Assad to take the game for the Canucks. 

With 2 points #22 Josh Giacomin was the game star for the Canucks.

Canucks Persevere Over the Thunder

Friday night the Canucks hit the Road for a game against the Drayton Valley Thunder.  After winning the first match up against the Thunder when they were in Calgary, the Canucks were looking for a similar outcome in Drayton Valley.

#3 Matt Benko opened the scoring in the first for the Thunder with a goal at 4:07.  The Canucks responded quickly as #22 Josh Giacomin put one in the net 1:26 later.  Assists on the goal went to #28 Brett Van Os and #18 Matt Painchaud.  With time running out in the first, the game remained tied 1-1.  Shots on net were 15-4 for the Canucks.

In the second the Thunder jumped back to the lead with a goal by #15 Rhett Willcox.  The Canucks weren’t backing down as #22 Josh Giacomin scored once again to tie the game with help from #28 Brett Van Os and #18 Matt Painchaud.  At 8:43 #22 Josh Giacomin scored his third goal of the game to give the Canucks their first lead of the game after being set up from #28 Brett Van Os and #18 Matt Painchaud.   Almost 30 seconds later #27 Jordan McConnell scored an unassisted marker to give the Canucks a 4-2 lead over the Thunder.  Shots at the end of the period were 27 for the Canucks 16 for the Thunder. 

In the third #13 Zach McNeill put one in the back of the net from #9 Ben Assad to make it 5-2.  Fending off the Thunder the Canucks took the game 5-2.  Final shots were 40-24 in favour of the Canucks

With the Hattrick #22 Josh Giacomin was selected as the game star for the Canucks.

Canucks Unable to Tie Things Up Against the Saints

Coming off a win against the Thunder the Canucks travelled to Spruce Grove for a face off against the Saints.  In the last meeting the Canucks took the game 5-0, so the Canucks were hoping things would work out for them again this time.

With both teams looking to move up in their respective divisions the Canucks, the first saw action on both ends of the ice.  With both teams battling hard neither team was able to put one in the net to take the lead.  After 20 minutes there was no score and shots on net were 9 for the Saints and 5 for the Canucks.

In the second the Saint were able to get on the board with a goal by #10 Eric Olson, who was assisted by #23 Dylan Bourlai and #24 Austin Parmiter. The Canucks pushed back but were unable to tie the game.  The period ended with the Saints holding onto a 1-0 lead.  Shots on net were 25-15 for the Saints.

In the third the Canucks came out to play outshooting the Saints 10-3 but they were unable to even the score.  The game came to a close with the Saints taking the game 1-0.

The star of the game for the Canucks was #4 Allan MacPherson.

Up next, the Canucks are heading to Canmore on Family day for a second place battle against the Eagles.  Then the Canucks will take on the Brooks Bandits in a home-and-home match up.  Things kick off at Max Bell on Friday, February 24th (Puck Drop 7:00 pm) before the Canucks make a trip out to Brooks on Saturday, Febraury 25th. Then on March 2nd the Canucks will host the Canmore Eagles before the Olds Grizzlys come to town for our Final game of the regular season.
