The Calgary Canucks are very pleased to announce Ben Assad as team captain for the 2016-2017 season. Assad, a 20-year old forward is in his second season with the Canucks and forth season in the AJHL.
“Ben epitomizes the mindset we want our entire team to have this season,” states Head Coach James Poole. “Due to his size, Ben has never gotten the respect he deserves as a player but he has always overcome that through sheer determination & passion for the game of hockey. If Ben’s teammates can emulate his on & off ice determination we will be sure to make some noise in the AJHL this season.”
“I am very honoured to be named captain of my hometown team,” said Assad, “and look forward to leading the Canucks back to the top.”
Joining Assad in the leadership group as Alternate Captains are 20-year old and second year Canucks Allan MacPherson (Calgary, AB) and Kyler Magus (Calgary, AB). 20-year olds Matt Painchaud (Delta, BC), acquired from LaRonge Ice Wolves in the summer and Brett Van Os (Sturgeon County, AB), acquired from the Sherwood Park Crusaders in the summer will also serve as Alternate Captains rotating the last ‘A’ between home & away games.
“We have a very solid leadership group that all embody some of the characteristics that make great leaders, but together they make each other & the entire team better,” said James Poole. “The Canucks organization is determined to achieve success this season and we are very confident in our leadership group to push the team in the right direction on a daily basis.”
