Canucks Take the Win over the Drumheller Dragons

Friday night the Canucks headed out of town to take on the Drumheller Dragons for the second time this season.  In the first match up of the season the game went to a shootout where the Canucks were able to take the win 4-3. 

After a relatively quiet first period, Canucks captain #9 Ben Assad scored an unassisted goal at 17:21. At the end of the first the Canucks were leading 1-0 and were out shooting the Dragons 11-8.

During the second period the Dragons tied the game as #27 Brayden Nicholetts put one on the board.  Shots on net were 22-18 for the Dragons after the second period of play  

Things started to heat up on the ice during the third period.  At 1:05 # 27 Jordan McConnell put one past Dragons goaltender #35 Hunter Virostek with help from Parker Ward.  Almost a minute later #18 Matt Painchaud and #28 Brett Van Os set up #9 Ben Assad for his second goal of the game to extend the  Canucks were lead to 3-1. Things got a little rough and the Canucks came away with a power play where #27 Jordan McConnell was able to get his second of the night, assisted by #23 Mark Drohan and #4 Allan MacPherson.   Just 36 seconds later #15 Zach Russell added another for the Canucks as he put one in the net from #17 Cale Chalifoux and # 11 Dalton Ossman.  Mid-way through the period Dragons forward #18 Joren Patenaude got the Dragons second goal of the game.  After 60 minutes the Canucks took the game by a score of 5-2.  Shots at the end of the game were 30-28 for the Dragons. 

The star of the game for the Canucks was #27 Jordan McConnell.

Canucks Unable to Make the Comeback Against the Crusaders

Saturday night the Canucks played against the Sherwood Park Crusaders at the Max Bell Centre, where the Sherwood Park Crusaders came away with the win by score of 3-2. Both teams started off the first with no power, but plenty of penalties. Shots after the first were sitting at 11 for the Canucks and 6 for the Crusaders.

The second period got both teams amped up as the Crusaders scored their first goal of the game at 6:47, by #21 Jared McAmmond, assisted by #2 Jacob Thomas and #15 Anthony Orubor. Shots on the net at the end of the period 16-9 in favour of the Canucks.

Going into the third down 1-0 the Canucks needed to come out strong to get back in the game.  The Crusaders increased their lead at 3:43 with a goal by #16 Tyler Maltby, assisted by #8 Quinton McAndrews and #2 Jacob Thomas. Down by 2 and on the penalty kill, Canucks forward #16 Brayden Brown scored a shorthanded goal to make it 2-1. It wasn’t long after that #29 Alex Rotundo scored the Crusaders third goal of the night. The Canucks weren’t backing down though as #13 Connor Blake put one on the board at 14:37, with help from #28 Brett Van Os and #9 Ben Assad. Although the Canucks battled to get back in the game they were unable to complete the comeback.  Shots at the end of the third were 13 for the Canucks and 6 for the Crusaders.

The Canucks game star for the night was #16 Brayden Brown.
