Nucks News – December 2021

As the Canucks get ready to celebrate the holiday season AND return back home to Max Bell, we recap November 2021 with the Canucks going 3-7-1.  

November 3rd vs Bonnyville Pontiacs

Canucks opened up the month in style with a huge win over the visiting Bonnyville Pontiacs. Matt Corbat scored twice in the first period, including a goal on the powerplay. Ben Koylak picked up the Canucks second power play goal of the game in the second, with Ivan Kedrov scoring in the third to seal the game with a 4-0 win. Ty Young picked up his first AJHL win and shutout stopping all 31 shots he faced.

November 5th vs Blackfalds Bulldogs
 
The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead early in the first before the Canucks   tied the game at 1-1 with a powerplay goal from Caden Steinke. A scoreless middle frame would find the two teams still tied heading into the 3rd with the “˜Dogs breaking the tie with an early powerplay goal. With under nine minutes to play, Steinke found the back of the net once again for his second of the game. Unfortunately, that would be all for Calgary as Blackfalds found the game-winner late in the 3rd.

November 6th at Drumheller Dragons

Back-to-back games for the Canucks, as they would hit the road for Saturday night matchup with the Dragons. A two-goal effort from Drumheller’s Ty Daneault would take this game with a score of 2-1. Dylan Clark scored the lone Canucks goal with a 3rd-period penalty shot.

November 13th vs Olds Grizzlies

Busy second-period for Canucks and Grizzlies saw the teams trade four goals resulting in a 2-2 tie that would last until overtime. Canucks went to work on the Powerplay scoring both of their goals on the man advantage from Blake Setter and Jordan MacFarlane. Calgary walked away with a point as Olds made quick work in the extra fram to take a 3-2 win.

November 16th at Okotoks Oilers

Ben Kotylak led the Canucks to a 4-2 win in Okotoks with a two-goal performance and three-point night. Calgary had a 2-0 lead heading into the 3rd period at the Pason Centennial Arena. The Oilers rallied back to tie the game, but Kotylak would break that tie on the powerplay. Canucks added the empty-netter from Daxton Budd to take the game 4-2. Ty Young was named the Canucks star for his 38 save night.

November 17th vs Brooks Bandits

The Canucks found themselves behind in a 6-1 game against the offence of the Brooks Bandits after two periods of play. The Canucks cut into the lead with two quick goals early in the third and added another with under five to play making it a 6-4 game, but would end up falling short when the Bandits added another goal on a late powerplay.

November 19th at Blackfalds Bulldogs

The Canucks headed up to Blackfalds for the first-ever game at the new EaglebuildersLP center. The Canucks had no chance to spoil the party as the Bulldogs scored 3 straight goals before the Canucks could find a goal for themselves. The Bulldogs took this contest, 3-2.

November 23rd vs Brooks Bandits

The Bandits took a 2-0 lead over the host Canucks after one period. Calgary would make it a one-goal game in the second period, just under a minute after making it a 2-1 game, the Bandits struck again making it 3-1. Calgary once again made it a one-goal game early in the 3rd, but that’s all they wrote as the Bandits took this one 5-2.

November 26th at Olds Grizzlies

Matthew Brunton and the Grizzlies traded goals making it a 1-1 game. Calgary would take this road contest 5-2, with a strong second period of 4 unanswered goals. Defenceman Zack Whittaker chipped in with 3 assists, with Ty Young stopping 38 of 40 for the Canucks.

November 27th vs Spruce Grove Saints

The second game as many nights did not fare as well for the Canucks. After coming out of the first period tied from a late goal by Dylan Clark, the Spruce Grove Saints scored two more to take a 3-1 lead. Matthew Brunton scored a powerplay goal in the third to make it a 1 goal game, but the Canucks came up short 3-2 to the Saints.

November 30th at Camrose Kodiaks

The Canucks closed out the month with a trip to Encana Arena in Camrose. Calgary saw an early 1-0 lead slip away as the Kodiaks scored 4 straight goals heading late into the second period. 15 seconds after the Kodiaks made it a 4-1 game, Justin Barker got another goal for the Canucks. Kodiaks added one more goal to win it 5-2.

Player of the Month

Ty Young went 3-6-1 with a .918 SV% and a 3.32 GAA in nine games in the month of November. Young posted one shutout and was named Canucks Star of the Game in five of his starts.
