The Canucks ended the month with a three-game winning streak, going 5-1-1. They now sit second in the AJHL South, just one point behind the Canmore Eagles. This weekend, Calgary will kick off the new year by hosting the Bonnyville Pontiacs and the Drumheller Dragons at Ken Bracko Arena.
Nolan DuPont, Nathan Maloney, and Jack Plandowski earned a bronze medal with Canada West in a 5-2 victory over Canada East at the World Jr. A Challenge in Camrose, Alberta. Plandowski scored a goal in the third period, while his teammates DuPont and Maloney contributed with assists during the game.
Calgary Canucks captain, Bowden Singleton, was named the Canalta Hotels AJHL Player of the Week, while Alexey Trischuk was named the Alberta Ford Dealers AJHL Defensive Player of the Week for the week of December 16-22, 2024. Singleton was also named Alberta Ford Dealers AJHL Player of the Month for December 2024.
December Recap
December 1st vs Drumheller Dragons
Alexey Trischuk kicked off the scoring for the Canucks late in the first period with his fifth of the season. The Dragons tied the game in the second and followed up by taking a 2-1 lead at 1:34 of the third period. Jack Plandowski brought the game level again, sending it into overtime. Nathan Moleney became the hero by scoring his fifth goal of the season, giving the Canucks a 3-2 victory.
December 6th at Fort McMurray Oil Barons
The Canucks would hit the road for a four-game road trip starting with a stop in Fort McMurray. Cody Pisarczyk got the first goal of the game and the Canucks would hold a 1-0 lead into the third period. The Oil Barons would tie the game but Bowden Singleton would regain the lead with under five to play. Pisarczyk would pick up his second of the game on the empty in the 3-1 win to the Canucks.
December 7th vs Bonnyville Pontiacs
After jumping out to a 1-0 lead thanks to Riley Bracko, Bonnyville struck three times in the second period to take a 3-1 advantage. Gavin Schmidt cut into the Pontiac’s lead in the third period with his fifth goal of the season. Later in the period, Hayden Fechner scored his tenth goal, tying the game and sending it into overtime. Extra time would solve nothing and the two clubs headed to a shootout, with the Canucks falling 4-3 after three rounds.
December 13th at Lloydminster Bobcats
Trailing 2-0 heading into the second, the Canucks picked up pair of powerplay goals from Rhett Melnyk and Rhys Jamieson to tie the game. Unfortunately, the Bobcats would break the tie and add on two more in the third to take a 5-2 win over the Canucks.
December 17th at Olds Grizzlys
The Canucks began scoring midway through the first period, starting with a goal from Rhys Jamieson, followed by goals from Alexy Trischuk and Gavin Schmidt, giving them a 3-0 lead. Olds would get one of their own to make a 3-1 game after one period, but in the second, the Canucks would score another three making it 6-1. Jamieson and Schmidt would each score their second of the game, while the Canucks got a powerplay goal from Captain Bowden Singleton. In the third, Hayden Fechner scored shorthanded while the Grizzlys scored their second of the game in a 7-2 Canucks victory.
December 20th vs Grande Prairie Storm
Jayden Joly scored his first goal as a Canuck in the opening period. After two periods of play, the Canucks and the Storm were tied 1-1. Early in the third period, the Canucks broke the tie with a shorthanded goal from Rhett Melnyk, making it 2-1. Hayden Fechner added an empty net goal, securing a 3-1 victory for the Canucks.
December 22nd vs Grande Prairie Storm
In a fast-paced first period, the Canucks and Storm traded four goals, resulting in a 2-2 tie as Bowden Singleton and Jack Plandowski each found the back of the net. In the second period, Singleton continued the scoring by completing his hat trick with two more goals, bringing the score to 4-2 in favour of Calgary. A few minutes later, Cody Pisarczyk and Jayden Joly each scored, extending the lead to 6-2. Plandowski added his second goal of the game to end the second period, making it 7-2. In the third period, Plandowski wasn’t done yet; he completed his hat trick on a power play, leading the Canucks to an 8-2 victory over the Storm.
Player Spotlight – #25 Alexey Trischuk
Alexy Trischuk is the leading all Canucks defenseman, with six goals and 20 points, placing him third in the league for defensemen. Since being acquired in a trade earlier this season with the Drayton Valley Thunder, Trischuk has been a solid presence on the backend for the Canucks.
