Weekly Recap: February 12 – February 19

The Canucks had a tough week falling in all three games played.

Up first, the Canucks were in Brooks to face off against the Bandits. The Bandits put on the pressure early putting up four goals in the first, to take a 4-0 lead heading into the second. Things continued to go the Bandits way as they added another four goals in the second period to extend their lead to 8-0. Early in the third the Bandits would score on the power play to make it 9-0. The Canucks got themselves on the board with a goal from #17 Tyler Petrie, assisted by #19 Zach Russell and #13 Cooper Johnson. The Bandits would push back and scored another two goals before the period ended to make it 11-1.

Friday the Canucks would be on the road once again to take on the Drumheller Dragons. After a back and forth first period the game would remain scoreless. In the second the Dragons would jump to a 4-0 lead scoring all four goals before the midway mark of the second. The Canucks weren’t going to back down and were rewarded as #20 Michael Johnson put one in the net. Assists on the goal went to #7 Michael Clarke and #12 Andrew Marshall. Late in the period the #28 Chad Varney would score on the power play to move the Canucks within two of the Dragons after a set up from #23 Mark Drohan and #27 Jordan McConnell. The period would end 4-2 Dragons but the Canucks were looking to continue the comeback in the third. At 8:48 of the third #13 Cooper Johnson added another for the Canucks from #24 Hayden Ursulak and #12 Andrew Marshall to make it 4-3 Dragons. Just under a minute later #25 Zach Webb would score the equalizing goal from #28 Chad Varney and #27 Jordan McConnell. #25 Zach Webb wasn’t done there are he put another in the net to give the Canucks their first lead of the game. The goal was assisted by #13 Cooper Johnson. Unfortunately, the Dragons would respond to tie the game before scoring on the power play to take back the lead. The final score would end up being 6-5 for the Dragons.

On Family Day Monday the Canucks would play against the Okotoks Oilers for the final time in the regular season. The Oilers were first on the board scoring at 5:59 of the first. The Canucks responded as #7 Michael Clarke put one past the Morris’ glove hand to tie the game from #24 Hayden Ursulak. The Oilers would end up scoring two goals before the period ended to take a 3-1 lead. To start the second the Oilers would extend their lead to 4-1. #8 Jaxon Steele would sneak past the Oilers defense to put one in the net to cut the Oilers lead in half. Assist on the goal would go to #7 Michael Clarke. With a power play goal the Oilers would take a three goal lead. In the third the Oilers would take advantage of another power play to make it 6-2. #28 Chad Varney would respond with a power play goal for the Canucks off a pass from #27 Jordan McConnell and #25 Zach Webb. The Oilers would get another on the power play but #12 Andrew Marshall would score for the Canucks from #18 Blake Stevenson to make it 7-4 Oilers. The game would end with the Oilers leading 7-4.

Up Next, the Canucks are looking to turn things around on Friday, February 23 when they host the Canmore Eagles for the final time this season. Then on Saturday, February 24 the Canucks will head up north for a match up against the Sherwood Park Crusaders.
