Canucks Players Help Kids Take Their First Shift!

The Calgary Canucks were in the community on Saturday morning, February 11th where four of the Canucks players helped with the on-ice execution of the Canadian Tire – The First Shift program.

This initiative is geared towards boys and girls between the ages of 6 to 10 who are not currently enrolled in minor hockey.  The kids, who had been fitted for brand new hockey equipment a couple of weeks back with help from the Canucks players, had the opportunity to be involved in on-ice sessions with experienced hockey instructors.

The Canucks players were on the ice today, helping with the Saturday morning session.  They helped teach lesson plans for the kids, and ran the various groups through a series of fun games and activities.

Over 50 kids were on the ice at Ernie Starr Arena in South East Calgary, where the initiative was held. The Canucks players certainly had their hands full with this energetic group!

The inspiration for The First Shift program is to get 1 million new kids playing the game of hockey across Canada in the next 10 years.  That is a goal that the Calgary Canucks organization would like to see happen, which is why the team was very proud to offer their assistance at this wonderful event.
