Calgary, Alberta – Saturday, May 17, 2025: The story continues for the Calgary Canucks at the 2025 Centennial Cup as they punched their ticket to the national finals after a thrilling 3-2 overtime win over the Rockland Nationals.
Trailing 2-0 late in the second, the Canucks found some life when Gavin Schmidt made it a one goal game with a shorthanded goal late in the period.
Calgary continued to battle in the third period and broke through with three minutes remaining in the game, with Gavin Schmidt scoring his second goal of the game, sending it into overtime.
The Canucks came out strong in overtime, and after ten minutes of nearly nonstop action, Hayden Fechner raced down the wing and cut toward the net to score, sending Ken Bracko Arena into cheers as he propelled the Canucks into the Centennial Cup Finals.
Canucks goaltender Lukas Renaud delivered a solid performance with 42 saves, giving his team the win and shutting the door for Calgary.
“Never in doubt, Never quit. They just kept going,” said Head Coach Brad Moran, “ I thought they battled through some tough calls and maybe didn’t get some, and the guys just kept going. They didn’t get rattled, and they stuck with it. And I think that’s a team that has a big goal in mind,”
The host Canucks will face the Melfort Mustangs in the Centennial Cup Finals Sunday night at the Max Bell Centre with a puck drop set for 5:00 PM.
