Supporting the next generation of scholar-athletes.
The Seaman Canucks Scholars Fund recognizes young hockey players who excel on the ice, in the classroom, and in their communities. Through scholarships and mentorship opportunities, the Fund helps remove financial barriers so athletes can focus on what matters most: training, education, and service.
Who Can Apply
The Fund is open to hockey players aged 16 to 20, including:
- Current Calgary Canucks players
- Male and female hockey players based in Calgary and the surrounding area
How to Apply
Eligibility criteria and application materials are available below. Completed applications must be submitted by June 15 each year for consideration by the Fund’s selection committee.
What Scholars Give Back
Receiving a Seaman Canucks Scholarship means more than financial support — it’s a commitment to community. Recipients contribute meaningful volunteer service through:
- Engagement with local schools and youth hockey programs
- Mentorship and outreach in Forest Lawn, the community surrounding our home rink at Max Bell Centre
- Community initiatives that promote healthy lifestyles and positive role modeling
Forest Lawn is one of Calgary’s most vulnerable communities, and our scholars play an active role in strengthening it.
Honouring the Seaman Legacy
The Fund honours the legacy of three brothers — Daryl K. (“Doc”), Byron J. (“BJ”), and Donald R. (“Don”) Seaman — pioneering leaders in Alberta’s energy sector and lifelong champions of education, community, and sport.
Born in Rouleau, Saskatchewan and shaped by the Great Depression, the Seaman brothers built their lives on hard work, integrity, resilience, and shared success. After the Second World War, they helped build Alberta’s modern oil and gas industry through Bow Valley Industries, growing it into one of Canada’s most respected energy companies. Their success was never measured in commercial terms alone — they were known for creating quality employment, championing progressive employee benefits, and ensuring prosperity was shared.
Education was foundational in the Seaman household. Their mother ensured all three sons graduated from the University of Saskatchewan as mechanical engineers, and that belief in education’s transformative power lives on through this Fund.
Hockey held a special place in their lives. Each brother played passionately at the university and community levels, making the sport a natural focus of their philanthropic legacy. The brothers also played a pivotal role in bringing the Calgary Flames to the city in 1980, and contributed to the 1988 Olympic Winter Games, the Okotoks Dawgs and Seaman Stadium, and many educational, health, and sport-related initiatives across Calgary.
Their philosophy was simple: leave things better than you found them.
