Weekly Recap: October 2 – October 8

It was tough week for the Canucks as their comeback efforts weren’t rewarded.

The week started out with a match up against the Canmore Eagles. The Eagles were first on the board with a goal from #13 Alex Young.  #11 Nolan Steer made it 2-0 Eagles with a goal at 6:31 of the first.  With the power play #25 Travis Verveda extended the Eagles lead to 3-0.  The Canucks were fighting hard and scored a goal of their own as #8 Dylan Williamson put one in the net from #5 Coby Mack and #4 Kyler Newman.  To open the second the Eagles made it 4-1 with a goal from #7 Jake Ashton. With some ground to make up #14 Tommy Tanner cut the Eagles lead in half after a set up from #25 Braydon Jenkins and #5 Coby Mack.  With time expiring the score sat at 4-2 Eagles. Ready for a comeback the Canucks hit the ice with force.  #24 Hayden Ursulak moved the Canucks closer to the Eagles with a goal on the power play.  Assists on the goal went to #19 Zach Russell and #11 Alex Wilkins.  Less than 2 minutes later the game was even up as # 12 Andrew Marshall took advantage of another power play with help from #19 Zach Russell and #28 Chad Varney. With the game tied up the Canucks were looking to take the lead.  It wasn’t meant to be as #11 Nolan Steer scored for the Eagles a short time later to take the lead. Down by one the Canucks pulled their goalie to hopefully take the game to OT, however, they were unable to get it past the Eagles goaltender.  Final score was 5-4 Eagles.

Up next the Canucks hit the ice for a Friday night showdown against the Okotoks Oilers.  With neither team able to score in the first the game would be settled in the final 40 minutes.  #11 Quinn Olsen scored at 13:03 of the second to give the Oilers a 1-0 lead.  Though the Canucks attempted to comeback the score would remain 1-0 at the end of the second.  At 59 seconds into the third the Oilers made it 2-0 with a goal from #14 Kyle Gordon.  #5 Coby Mack scored to put the Canucks on the board and 1 step closer to tying the game with help from #21 Landon Melzer and #28 Chad Varney. With an extra attacker the Canucks put in their best effort to take the game to extra time but the #14 Kyle Gordon scored on the empty net to make it 3-1 Oilers.

Saturday the Canucks were in Canmore for the second face off against the Eagles within a week.  #15 Quinton Ong scored a late power play goal for the Eagles to take a 1-0 lead.  The second period did not go as the Canucks planned as the Eagles scored 4 goals to make it 5-0.  The Eagles goals in the second were scored by #15 Quinton Ong, #12 Colton Young (2) and #27 Coy Prevost.  With only 20 minutes left to play #12 Colton Young extended the Eagles lead to 6-0 with a power play goal.  With 37 second remaining #25 Travis Verveda made it 7-0 Eagles.  Final shots were 42-33 in favour of the Canucks.

Up next the Canucks are set for a battle against the Drumheller Dragons on home on Tuesday October 10th before heading up North to face the Bonnyville Pontiacs on Friday, October 13th and the Lloydminster Bobcats on Saturday October 14th.
