2025 Centennial Cup Champions Calgary Canucks Announce the Creation of the Seaman Canucks Scholars Fund

Calgary, Alberta — The 2025 Centennial Cup Champions, the Calgary Canucks Junior A Hockey Club, are proud to announce the establishment of the Seaman Canucks Scholars Fund (the “Fund”), a transformative scholarship initiative designed to support and develop exceptional young hockey players who demonstrate excellence both on the ice and in the classroom.

The Seaman Canucks Scholars Fund honours the enduring legacy of the Seaman brothers Daryl K. (“Doc”), Byron J. (“BJ”), and Donald R. (“Don”), pioneering leaders in Alberta’s energy sector and lifelong champions of education, community development, and team sport. Born in Rouleau, Saskatchewan, to Byron and Letha Mae Seaman, the brothers came of age during the Great Depression, an experience that shaped their character and instilled in them the values of hard work, integrity, resilience, and shared success. These values guided their personal lives, professional achievements, and philanthropic pursuits, and remain central to the legacy they left behind.

Following the Second World War, the Seaman brothers were among the first generation of entrepreneurs who helped build Alberta’s modern oil and gas industry. Through Bow Valley Industries, they grew one of Canada’s most respected energy companies, distinguished not only by its scale but by its innovation. Yet their success was never measured solely in commercial terms. The brothers were deeply committed to creating high quality employment, advancing progressive employee benefits, and ensuring that prosperity was shared with the people who helped build their enterprises.

Education was a foundational value in the Seaman household, championed by their mother, who ensured that all of her sons graduated from the University of Saskatchewan as mechanical engineers. This belief in the transformative power of education is carried forward through the Fund, which supports athletes who exemplify academic achievement, athletic excellence, leadership, and community engagement. Hockey held a special place in the brothers’ lives, each played passionately at the university and community levels, making the sport a natural and meaningful focus of their philanthropic legacy.

The Seaman Canucks Scholars Fund is designed to strengthen the Calgary Canucks program both on and off the ice by creating a sustainable, long-term competitive advantage rooted in post-secondary education. The Fund recognizes and rewards hockey players who demonstrate commitment, discipline, leadership, and teamwork, while reducing financial barriers that can impede academic and athletic development. By enabling players to focus more fully on training, education, and community service, the Fund helps cultivate well-rounded individuals prepared for future opportunities in higher levels of hockey, post-secondary education, and leadership beyond sport.

The Fund also delivers significant community benefit. Scholarship recipients are required to contribute meaningful volunteer service, including engagement with local schools, youth hockey programs, and community initiatives, particularly in and around Forest Lawn, one of Calgary’s most vulnerable communities and home to the Canucks’ rink, Max Bell Centre. Through mentorship, outreach, and service, Seaman Canucks Scholars serve as positive role models for at risk youth, promote healthy lifestyles, strengthen community bonds, and reinforce the importance of balancing education, sport, and citizenship.

Beyond business and education, the Seaman brothers were deeply committed to their community. In 1980, they played a pivotal role in bringing the Calgary Flames to the city, with a clear focus on ensuring the franchise would be a lasting and meaningful asset for all Calgarians. Their contributions also included the 1988 Olympic Winter Games, the Okotoks Dawgs and Seaman Stadium, and numerous educational, health, and sport-related initiatives. Across every endeavor, they lived by a simple but powerful philosophy: to leave things better than they found them.

The establishment of the Seaman Canucks Scholars Fund has been made possible through the remarkable generosity and leadership of its founding supporters: the Eleanor and Don Seaman Foundation, the Kanovsky Family Foundation, the Daryl K. Seaman Canadian Hockey Fund (an endowment fund administered by the Calgary Foundation), and the Edmonstone Family Foundation. Their shared commitment to education, sport, and community reflects the very values championed by the Seaman brothers themselves. Without the vision, stewardship, and gracious support of these community leaders, the Seaman Canucks Scholars Fund and the opportunities it now creates for future generations of scholar athletes would not exist.

The Seaman Canucks Scholars Fund is administered by the Sport for Calgary Foundation, ensuring strong governance, transparency, and long-term sustainability in support of Calgary’s young athletes and their communities.

Hockey players aged 16 to 20, including current Calgary Canucks players and Calgary and area based male and female hockey players, who are interested in applying for a scholarship are encouraged to visit the Calgary Canucks website at www.calgarycanucks.ca, where eligibility criteria and application materials are available. Completed applications must be submitted no later than June 15 of each calendar year for consideration by the Fund selection committee.

The Calgary Canucks are proud to launch the Seaman Canucks Scholars Fund as a lasting tribute to extraordinary community builders and as a meaningful investment in the future of hockey, education, and leadership in Calgary.
