Calgary Canucks, 3 SO, Spruce Grove Saints, 2

The Calgary Canucks are on a three-game winning streak for the first time in nearly three years due to a dramatic shootout victory over the Spruce Grove Saints.

Derek Thorogood tied the game at 2-2 with 3:03 remaining in the third period, and after a scoreless overtime period, Travis Wellman and Gui Glasspoole scored goals in the shootout to deliver the win to the home team.

The Saints came into this game to play its third game in three days while the Canucks were off since last Sunday's win against the Sherwood Park. There was perhaps some rust in the first period as netiher team was able to generate many quality chances. The Canucks did outshoot the Saints 11-6 though. Both Colin Cooper (Canucks) and Kenny Cameron (Saints) stopped all the shots they faced.

The Saints came out strong in the 2nd period and 2:07 in the second period Doug Morris completed on a 2-1 rush to make it a 1-0 game for Spruce Grove.

The Canucks however took over as the period went along and at 9:36 of the middle frame, Trent Geiger scored to tie the game at 1-1, in a scramble in front of the net.

That is how the second period ended, tied 1-1.

The first part of the third period featured big saves from Cooper and Cameron but at 9:41 of the third period the Saints went ahead again with Morris scoring his second goal of the game.

The Canucks mounted a siege in the latter half of the second part of the third period and was rewarded when Thorogood scored the game tying goal.

The Saints appeared to run out of gas as the Canucks got 15 out of the 18 shots on goal, enroute to the shootout win.

The Canucks record improved to 9-9-1 to pull them within 1 point of 3rd, 4th, and 5th in the South Division.

The Saints record fell to 11-6-3 but the team remains 2nd in the North Division.
